Publisher Heidelberg
In
1997 I worked for Springer Publisher in Heidelberg, a major publisher
for scientific books and journals worldwide. It is not the same as Axel
Springer Publisher, who publishes yellow-press material.
I conceptualised
and developed their Intranet for the Multimedia department completely
from scratch, including investigating a needs analysis. I implemented
an engine which allows each staff member to enter news into a common
database, which will automatically be deleted after it reaches its expiry
date. The key feature was that on each start up the user will only see
the news he hasn't seen unless he requests otherwise.
The advantage against known email and listserver solutions was that
the administrator was easily able to update and correct old postings
instead of sending another mass email.
This ensured an immediate and effective communication flow within the
department. I used Perl on a Unix server to implement the functionality.
In addition
to that, I programmed some Java applets for interactive books online
and did the graphical layout for the Intranet.
